Writing some words in a snap
Time: 8:45-9:30

Writing some words in a snap using the word wall.
Connection
·      Remind children of the previous story I shared with them, and tell them I want to teach them a strategy that will make writing long stories a little easier.
Give or Gather
Information
(Procedure)
·      Tell the children that there are some words they will just know and write quickly, and some words they can write after a quick check of the word wall.

·      Have students work in a whole class group activity using the white boards, and explain to them that
“some of the words will be ones they know in a snap, or they might need to check the word wall to help them write it down in their small boards.” Please use this as a time to remind them that different people have different abilities and what they find easy to do may be a little harder for others.

·      Give example to demonstrate the activity to students.
- “ For example, we want to write the word “to”, some of you know to in a snap.
- If you don’t know it, say to and listen for the first sound.
- Then find it on the wall under that letter.
- So, I either just know “to”, or I look up here and fix the spelling into my brain.”

·      Have students practice writing words on the white boards using example from the reviewed story.

Show them this sentence:
My grandmother said, “it is always nice to have tea with cake.”
Active Participation

·      Remind students that they now know they can write words from their memory, or from both their memory and the word wall.

·      Have students write a new small moment story using the strategy they have learned.
Assessment

Differentiation

Extended activity

·      Informal observation notes will be used to assess students understanding of the strategy they learned. I will jot my notes using post-notes
·      Ask the students to practice writing few more word like a snap on the white boards - with or without the word wall.
- Students will work with a partner.
Give them examples to write from the wall, one at a time.
- Yara likes recess.
·      Where is my brother?
·      I like to play soccer.

·      Work with students in a small group.
·      Provide a list of ideas for things to write about.

·      Give each student 20 index cards, and ask them to look for words they know in a snap from their previous stories.

·      If students are done finding their 20 words, they post the new words on the word wall.

·      Students can start a new piece if they are done doing all the above activities.
